SACHIKO CLYDE

I met Sachiko in New York in March 2024, during the pop-up event I attended. I remember it was a spontaneous yet special encounter. A stylish girl with long dark hair and Asian features approached me, asking who was behind the Mosquito brand.

It was amazing that someone came to the event looking for Mosquito, looking for me. In that moment, I realized how small the city can feel, and how big it feels when someone seeks you out for what you do. I didn’t know anyone in New York, so I wasn’t expecting to see anyone in particular. Just the fact that someone crossed the city to see my pieces was a huge compliment to my work—a gift in itself.

We started talking. She has been following the brand for a while and came to the event to see the products in person. She already had her favorites, pieces like the Barranaca necklace, the Varadero, and the Tapia comb. She’s a stylist based in New York, with an American father and a Japanese mother, and she decided to settle in the city seven years ago. And just like that, in the middle of the city that never sleeps, we’ve met.

We exchanged contacts and promised to stay in touch. Sachiko was incredibly generous, recommending stores where my products could fit perfectly. For me, any help is welcome when you’re starting a business, and especially when it comes from someone who offers it so selflessly and genuinely. Her gesture, along with her curiosity about my project, and about what I do, stayed with me… and, why not, a little piece of my heart too. It’s one of those memories that stays with me, tucked away in a special corner of my experience.

I was lucky enough to return to New York shortly after, later that same year. This time, with a little more experience, I was clear that I wanted to organize a photoshoot in the city. Every time I go, I feel this deep emotion, as if it’s my first time. New York has something so unique; there’s always something new to discover, so laid-back, vibrant, and full of life.

When I thought about who could help me capture that story, I immediately thought of Sachiko. I suggested we create something together, in her city. She happily agreed, and from there, the collaboration began. Her presence in the shoot was key to making everything perfect. She helped me shape my ideas, both creatively and practically. To dress up that mosquita (in that case, beautiful Serena was our musa), to explore how she will combine and use pieces such as the Abalone brooch, the Paloma necklace or the Mozza necklace, a classic from our permanent collection.

The photoshoot took place on my last day in the city, the same day I was flying back home. The sky was completely clear, and the sun was shining brightly. That same day, I also met Levi, her giant, adorable, and loving dog. Of course, he also modeled for us. Many thanks to both Sachiko and Levi for making me feel so comfortable, like at home, for your generosity, enthusiasm, and help. I’m deeply grateful, from the bottom of my heart.

Special thanks, as well, to my dearest friend Elna and to Serena for their unconditional support !

A bit more about Sachiko,

One restaurant: Locanda Vini & Olii. The food is not the most impressive but it always feels so cozy inside and I like the long walk from my apartment to the restaurant. It’s low key and never hard to get into. It’s not a place hip, young people go, which I like.

One book: Bluets – beautiful and poetic. Blue is my favorite color. I gave my copy to a man recently. I won’t do that again.

One city: Porto – Peaceful and Serene. A nice place to get away, read and write. The pace is slow in a way that my New York brain needs from time to time.

One dish:  Chawanmushi – savory Japanese custard dish. Not served at many Japanese restaurants. Feels intimidatingly hard to make. It always feels so special to find it on a menu.

One artist: Helen Frankenthaler

One film: Stand By Me – River was everything to me as a kid.

One song: Baby Don’t Go – Dum Dum Girls

One flower: Orchid

One color: Blue

One smell: Cedar

One mosquito jewel: Barranca was my first love. I admired how big the beads were and how they created an outfit on their own.
